It’s no longer a ‘friend of a friend’ who has suffered from or succumbed to the devastation of COVID-19. In more recent times the tragedy of COVID-19 has hit closer to home and the effects lasting longer than anyone wished for.

WHAT IS LONG COVID?

Long COVID, now also known as Chronic COVID syndrome (CCS) and Long-haul COVID, is a condition characterized by long term symptoms persisting after the typical recovery period of COVID-19.

According to a study done in the UK, approximately 10% of those who tested positive for COVID-19 experienced one or more symptoms which lasted longer than 12 weeks.

Some research is showing that up to 26% of MILD cases had at least 1 symptom which lasted more than 2 months.

WHAT LONG LASTING SYMPTOMS ARE COMMONLY EXPERIENCED?

There are nearly 50 different symptoms associated with Long COVID, yet the most frequently reported symptoms are –

  • Fatigue
  • Body aches
  • Shortness of breath
  • Difficulty concentration (brain fog)
  • Headache
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Inability/difficulty with exercise
  • Loss of taste/smell
  • Muscle pain
  • Depression

WHAT CAUSES LONG COVID?

Owing to the newness of COVID-19, the exact cause of Long COVID is not yet established. It is proposed however that Long COVID can be a result of a persistent immune response trigger by the virus that results in an inflammatory response. Another possibility could be due to tissue damage done during the acute phase of the illness.

HOW LONG WILL LONG COVID PERSIST?

There is no clear indication of how long it will last for, owing to the novelty of the virus. However, a comparison to a similar SARS virus which caused outbreaks between the years 2002 – 2004 showed signs of similar prolonged symptoms, leaving some effected people unable to work for up to 36 months after infection.

HOW DO I MANAGE LONG COVID?

  • Symptom management
  • Maintain a healthy, balanced diet
  • Rest
  • Exercise (as tolerated) – setting achievable goals
  • Limiting alcohol, caffeine and smoking

However, because of the large variety of Long COVID symptoms people may require individualized rehab programs. It may be helpful to connect with a support network, for your physical, mental and social well-being.
