Physiotherapy is one of many ways to take care of pain in your body. From a sore back to knee pain, Physiotherapy helps your body to gain strength and improve functionality.
If you have not experienced a physiotherapy session before, here are a few things to expect during your first treatment.
In your first session, we will do an initial assessment to understand the nature of the injury or pain as well as find out about any medical conditions that you may have. We will conduct a full examination that includes performing all relevant tests to get to the root of the injury such as nerve testing, spinal and joint mobility. Should we feel that you may need additional investigations, we may refer you to get an ultrasound or x-ray to aid us in our assessment.
If the injured area is covered by clothing, we may ask you to expose that area to assess and treat effectively. Although we are not physical trainers, we will however, ask you to perform some exercises to check the level of the mobility. It’s highly advisable to wear comfortable & functional clothing to your session such as loose fit shorts and a t-shirt.
During this initial assessment, we will discuss our findings with you in a relatable manner and together, come up with a suitable treatment plan that includes safe and effective modalities to ease your pain and improve your function. We will then advise you on how many sessions you may need and how often these sessions need to take place.
At the end of the session, we may give you some very important homework, and yes, we know when you don’t do it! Exercises given to you, are to help get you back to full function and to improve on the progress we make during our sessions.
