10.06.2022 is a day etched in my memory—the day I met Skyler and her incredible family. Just a few days after her first birthday, my colleague and I were referred by her doctor to the paediatric ward to assess and treat a little girl with delayed milestones. This hospital stay was challenging for the family, as rigorous testing led to a diagnosis of epilepsy. This marked the beginning of our journey together.
Skyler’s family, determined to make a difference, embraced a new routine that included a ketogenic diet and medication for the epilepsy, and weekly—sometimes bi-weekly—physiotherapy sessions. We focused on building her strength, coordination, and balance. Progress was gradual but steady. Along the way, Skyler received an additional diagnosis of autism. While initially daunting, this diagnosis helped guide her treatment.
With time and unwavering dedication, the hard work began to pay off. Skyler started moving independently, she started standing, she started walking! Now, two years later, Skyler is not just walking—she’s playing and exploring the world with a newfound confidence and zest for life. Her improvement is evident in many ways: she now makes beautiful eye contact, engages well in activities, and loves giving hugs.
Skyler’s story is a powerful testament to resilience and determination. Her journey, supported by her family’s commitment and early intervention, has been nothing short of inspiring. We have created a bond that will last a lifetime. Her achievements offer hope and inspiration for other young lives facing similar challenges.
