My nephew’s story is one of resilience and love. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor at age 2, and this journey lasted 6 years until he passed away in 2017. Coming from a family rooted in rural traditions, we took very long to take him to the hospital and this had very negative consequences, we initially turned to cultural ways of healing. Navigating western medicine was challenging, but it ultimately opened our eyes to its value but the condition had progressed far worse.

The healthcare team played a huge role in our journey. They showed love, compassion, and understanding, making the hospital feel like a second home. What struck me was the multidisciplinary team’s dedication – physios, OTs, caregivers, and doctors working together to provide holistic care and support. The hospital was our second home, but we never felt away from home because the team was empathetic and understanding of our situation. They made it easier for us to trust them, and their dedication made the hard times bearable.

In our family, he’s gone but never forgotten. His journey taught us about the importance of early intervention, rehabilitation programs and the power of compassionate care.

As I embark on a journey to specialize in neuro-pediatrics, I’m reminded of my nephew’s journey – it wasn’t easy, but with every step, involving the multidisciplinary team helped us get through milestones and celebrated all minor achievements together.
From the first time he managed to roll with assistance to running on his own. His journey left a mark and he lived his life as a hero.
