Why Pelvic Health?

By: Demi

Patients always ask me, “Why would you go into this line of work?” Which usually implies some sort of dirty nature!

Before I went into pelvic health I was involved in a bladder program at a public hospital I was working at. If I am honest, I didn’t really know what I was doing but at the time it was a matter of following the protocol and getting the job done!

I’ll never forget this young Indian boy, about 16 years old. He wore diapers to school his entire life. The treatment protocol had a questionnaire at the beginning of every session. In his first session, I looked at the young boy and attempted to get some answers out of him… he never made eye contact and his dad subsequently answered all the questions on his behalf. In his second session, I looked at the young boy again and attempted to get some answers out of him… he never made eye contact and his dad answered all the questions on his behalf. In his third session I looked at his dad and asked how is it going. This moment I’ll never forget and still gives me goosebumps to this day!

The dad didn’t have the chance to answer as the young boy promptly looked me in the eyes and said he hadn’t worn a diaper to school that week!

At this moment it wasn’t the fact that he physically could control his bladder it was the fact that this young boy could engage with me as a person, his confidence and persona had changed as a result!

So, my simple reply is that these are problems people really don’t want to have. They impact people not only on a physical level in terms of function but also on a large unspoken emotional level! Pelvic function is so closely linked with our dignity, that any disruption can cause a person’s whole persona to alter!

So the real question at the end of it is why, not go into pelvic health?
