With any thoracic or cardiac procedure, physiotherapy is aimed at opening the lungs to their fullest capacity, decreasing the work of breathing and ensuring mobilization within the safety limits that your heart can take.
Thoracic and/or cardiac surgery involves any operation or procedure that usually affects the heart and/or lungs. This can be required after an acute trauma like a car accident causing a hematoma of the lungs or as a result of a more chronic issue like an insufficient valve of the heart.
Rehabilitation may include conditions such as:
- Spontaneous pneumothorax
- Lobectomies
- Pleural effusions
- Atelectasis
- Coronary stent or bypass surgery
- Cardiac valve replacement surgery
Rehabilitation requires a proactive and prompt focus on pulmonary rehabilitation and mobilization to open the chest and get the heart pumping. This will start in hospital as soon as possible and will be progressed long past your discharge with a comprehensive home exercise program to help you achieve your optimal physical level.
