The pelvic floor is responsible for supporting the function of urination, bowel movements, sex, pregnancy and delivery. It also keeps the bladder, intestines and reproductive organs in place.

Sounds important, right? You’re absolutely right!
These functions can sometimes be affected by an array of different issues. For example, an unexpected trauma to the pelvis, a difficult birth, prostate or uterine cancer, chronic straining to pass stool etc.
Physiotherapy can help in regaining the functions of these very important organs and structures of the pelvis. Treatment always starts off conservatively with looking at changing behaviors, adjusting dietary or fluid intake, the psychological impacts on function, electrotherapy and pelvic floor rehabilitation. However, in some circumstances more invasive techniques are needed and available such as internal examination, dilators for sexual dysfunction and even biofeedback.
Not all these dysfunctions are isolated to the pelvis. Other areas of woman’s health include the post-operative management of breast cancer and the journey ahead into reconstruction, pre and post-natal care and the management of related issues such as diastasis recti, cracked nipples, mastitis etc.
